Hi families-
I hope you all had a wonderful extended weekend. Here are your updates for the week: A peek into the classroom Our spelling words this week will follow the pattern of hard and soft g. Words with soft g makes the /j/ sound (like giraffe). Words with the hard g makes the /g/ sound (like goat). When deciding whether or not to read a word as a hard or soft g, we look at the following rules: if the vowels e, i, or y come after the letter g, then it is read as /j/ (soft g). If the letter a, o, u, or any other consonant come after the letter g, then the word is read as hard g. This week's spelling words are: age, angel, germ, gym, huge, goat, gas, dragon, good, glue. Our sight words for this week are France, column, church, oxygen, various, opposite, chart, pretty, fresh, suffix, repeated, western, sister, plural, agreed, wrong, prepared, solution, shop, especially. List 17 powerpoint can be found here. In reading, we are working on reading nonfiction texts and pulling out the main idea and supporting details. This will come into play for our writing unit in informational. Students will be assigned a planet and they will research and write an informational book about that planet. In math, we finished practicing how to measure with various measuring tools. This week we will be looking at different measurements and solving problems with them with addition and subtraction (i.e. finding the perimeter of a door with given height and length and/or finding how much longer one scarf is than another given both of their lengths in centimeters). 100th Day of School The 100th day of school is this week! It will be on Thursday, February 21st. We will be doing different literacy and math activities that are related to the day. Students are welcomed to dress up in two ways: 1) Dressing up as if they are 100 years old - wigs, gray hair spray, eye glasses, etc. 2) Wearing a shirt/pants/hat that represents 100 things on it (i.e., 100 cotton balls glued on to a tshirt, 100 stickers or buttons stuck on a hat) Here is a link for inspiration: HERE Health Completed Mr. McCracken has shared with me that 1st grade health is now completed and classes will resume as both days Tuesdays and Fridays with gym. IN NEED OF SUPPLIES! It's that time of year again where we are low on supplies! We are particularly low on wet wipes (for surfaces), paper towels, and kleenex. The class would greatly appreciate it if those particular items were replenished :). Important Dates February 21st - 100th Day of School! March 21st - Literacy Night 5:30-7:00 March 22nd - Spring Pictures (more info to come) Ms. Chin
