Hi families-
I hope that you had a wonderful Spring Break. From the class sharing, it sounds like many of you had a very busy break!! We are counting down to the last two months of the school year. Upcoming Important Dates April 30th - Music Field Trip to Kenwood School (information to come) May 15th - Family Fitness Night (5:30p-7:00p) May 17th - Progress Reports May 27th - No School - Memorial Day June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 14th - Award Ceremony June 20th - Last Day of School! **Field Day TBA Writing Museum You are invited to come see our writing museum this week. Our writing museum will be on Thursday, April 25th from 10:15-11:15 in the morning and 1:30-2:30 in the afternoon. We will be featuring the students' hard work on their planets informational books. No worries if you're not able to make it, the students will be sent home with their finished products :). Peek into our Classroom As we enter in the beginning of the last quarter, we will be learning the last few 2nd grade things and starting on some 3rd grade curriculum. You may have noticed in the week before Spring break, students were learning the beginnings of multiplication. We will be continuing that with the foundations of multiplication and learning the different strategies of solving multiplication problems. The five strategies that we've covered and will be continuing to use are skip counting (click here for the math chants that we practice), arrays, repeated addition, number line, and equal groups. This week we will be covering the commutative property of multiplication, division as sharing, and division as repeated subtraction. In writing we have begun our opinion writing unit. Today we learned how to brainstorm our ideas/reasons to make a strong opinion using a graphic organizer as a tool. We will continue to build these out on how to make our brainstorm ideas into an opinion writing piece. In reading, we are learning about author's purpose (to persuade, inform, or entertain) and have been looking at different examples of texts to identify what is the author's purpose and how we know. We will then take this and look into the author's craft of the text's structure to solidify our answer of what the purpose is. We have completed our science unit last quarter and are switching back over to social studies where we will be looking at how our Earth provides resources for us now and in history. We will also be looking at how we work together as people to serve in our communities and the roles we all play. Array City In the week before Spring Break, we started a math project called "Array City" in class. Students were able to make different buildings with the windows as arrays. They then took each building and wrote the multiplication and addition equations that coincided with the array. Here is a couple of pictures of their amazing projects (picture one, picture two)If you're ever in the 2nd floor of Lenart, you'll see their awesome array cities hung up. Music Field Trip Students were sent home with a music field trip form for April 30th yesterday. The field trip is to Kenwood Academy and is $7 for the bus. If you have any questions about the field trip, please contact Mr. Coulter at [email protected]. Please have your child turn in the permission slip and money by Friday, April 26th. Chaperones will be notified if they have been selected by Friday via email. Have a wonderful week! :)

I don't know about you, but this warm weather really reminds me of how close Spring Break is-- or perhaps it's just how restless the kiddos have been.
This week will be a rather easy-going week. We are putting our final touches on our informational books (still), but we also have a little surprise that we are putting together for our writing museum. I had previously anticipated that our writing museum would be this Thursday and Friday-- however many of our students are still finishing their final drafts so we'll have to postpone it. I'm looking at the Thursday and Friday when we return after break. There will be no reading log for this week. Spelling words for this week were given last week. Students will be tested this Friday, April 12th. The spelling focus are words that end with "y" and how to correctly make it plural/add s at the end. The rule is that if a vowel comes before the y, then just add s. If a consonant comes before the y, then change the y to an i and add es. In math we are starting in our 3rd grade math book-- starting with the basics of multiplication. We are beginning with multiplication as repeated addition, and moving forward with multiplication as arrays (rows and columns), patterns within multiplication, and the commutative property of multiplication. Book fair started today for students. All the students were able to make a visit to the book fair today, whether they brought money or not. For the rest of the week, only students who bring money will be able to make a visit to the book fair. Most of the students in our class were able to make a "wish list" of books and you will be receiving that list of items during report card pick up on Wednesday. As a reminder, this Wednesday, April 10th is a non-attendance day of school for Students. Parent-Teacher conferences/Report Card pick up is scheduled on this date from 11:00a-6:00p. Thank you to all those who used the following link to sign up online (HERE). If you still haven't signed up and none of the remaining times work for you, please let me know and we can set up an alternative time and day. Upcoming Important DatesApril 8th - Book fair begins April 10th – Parent-Teacher Conferences (Report Card Pick up) April 12th - Book fair ends April 15th – Start of Spring Break April 22nd – Students Return from Spring Break April 30th - Music Field Trip to Kenwood School (information to come) May 15th - Family Fitness Night (5:30p-7:00p) May 17th - Progress Reports May 27th - No School - Memorial Day June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 14th - Award Ceremony June 20th - Last Day of School! Hi families-

If none of these times on this date works for you, please let me know and we can set up an alternative meeting time. Peak into This Week In reading, we are looking into comparing and contrasting the different characters and stories (RL.2.9). In math we are working on dividing a rectangle into equal squares; and dividing circles and rectangle into halves, thirds, and fourths (2.GA.3). In spelling we are working on words that end with "y" and how to correctly make it plural/add s at the end. The rule is that if a vowel comes before the y, then just add s. If a consonant comes before the y, then change the y to an i and add es. The test to our spelling words will be on April 12th due to the upcoming no attendance days for students. Words are boys, days, plays, annoys, enjoys, armies, pennies, copies, berries, ladies. Writing Museum We are just about done with our informational books on planets.
