The school picnic will be this Friday, June 7th. The picnic is an all-day event from 9:30-2:00 and families are welcomed to join us! Here are some important information about the day!
Classroom Shirt Colors For safety and easy recognition, each class is given a color to wear for the day. 1st grade's color is ORANGE. Mrs. Gosa (Jaiah's mom) shared that she was able to buy a plain orange t-shirt from Michaels with a package of multi-colored fabric to decorate for only $8 (with a 40% coupon that you can easily pull up on your phone). Feel free to get creative! If your child already owns an orange shirt, that works too-- designs and writing are fine as well. Pre-K - Red Kindergarten - Lime Green / Neon Green 1st Grade - Orange 2nd Grade - Pink 3rd Grade - Green 4th Grade - Gray 5th Grade - Purple 6th Grade - Blue 7th Grade - White / Tie Dye 8th Grade - Black 1st grade Picnic Donations Though lunch and activities will be provided for the students, many Lenart families also bring snacks, drinks, games, sunscreen, foldable tables, chairs, etc. for our kiddos throughout the day. You can sign up for what you would like to bring here-- this is optional but really helps in making the day enjoyable and a successful for our students. If you would like to start dropping off the items for the picnic early, I will store them in our classroom throughout the week (please no large items as we won't have room-- but items like water bottles, snacks, etc. can be brought in early). Whole School Picnic Donations As a whole school, LPCG will be collecting donations. Please bring all donations to the main office starting on Monday to Wednesday. Donation Suggestion List: Pre-K, K, & 1st grades - Fruit Snacks 2nd & 3rd grades - Snack size bags of chips 4th & 5th grades - Juice Boxes 6th, 7th, & 8th grades - Water Volunteers LPCG are also looking for parent volunteers to facilitate the games, pack and pass out goodie bags, monitor refreshments, and collect tickets at the vendor booths. If you would like to volunteer please complete the attach form here and return to school or email [email protected]. Hi families-
We are down to 17 more school days left of school (16 if you don't count today!) Important Dates June 6th - Field Trip to Lincoln Park Zoo June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 11th - NWEA Reading Test June 12th - NWEA Math Test June 14th - Award Ceremony (at 12:30) June 17th - Start of Step-Up Week (students will "step-up" to their next grade-- 1st graders will be going to 2nd grade classroom to experience what it'll be like next year). June 20th - Last Day of School/Field Day Recycle Your Gear! Student Council Recycles Gym Clothes for Recess Gear Student Council is collecting gently, used clean Lenart gear. Donate your outgrown Lenart Gear -- a collection box is available by Mr. Carl's desk. Students and/or parents may purchase new-to-you Lenart Gear for a $1 a piece at the school picnic (June 7). Proceeds will be used to purchase new recess equipment. Field Trip Thank you the 11 families that have turned in their field trip form and money. Please remember that forms and $7 for the bus is due THIS Friday! We will be going with Kindergarten and 2nd grade. The field trip will be on Thursday, June 6th. Please let me know if you would like to chaperone-- you must have gone through the CPS volunteer application and be a level 1 or 2 (Level 1 preferred). The trip will be free for chaperones, however students will need to pay $7 for the bus. We will be eating lunch at the zoo so please prepare a home lunch (I recommend packing it in a bag in that can be disposed or easily held on it -- example a drawstring bag-- for convenience). Picnic (updated information!!) The school picnic is next week June 7th! The LPCG will be organizing this school event. For safety and easy recognition, each class is given a color to wear for the day. 1st grade's color is ORANGE. The picnic is an all-day event from 9:00-2:00 and families are welcome to join us. Lunch will be provided for students. In previous years, parents bring snacks, drinks, games, foldable tables, foldable chairs, sunscreen, etc. for our class throughout the day. You can sign up for what you would like to bring for the day-- this is optional but really helps in making the day enjoyable and a success for our kiddos. You can sign up here. Another thing I will be requesting is for a family or two to bring a large tent. The large tent will provide cover for the day in the designated area on the field as "home base". Peak into this week As we are nearing the end of the school year, we are tying up loose ends and finishing up our 1st grade curriculum. I have been using the students' NWEA student profiles to drive our instruction for the rest of the year. In preparation for NWEA, we will be looking at the skills that are listed on the profile and learning and practicing them for the remaining weeks. You may have notice that your child did not receive a new spelling list. The list from last week will be our last list, but after grading the tests, the class as a whole will need to be retaught the words. Though the students did not struggle with the -ture and -tion spelling pattern, we seem to be missing the sounds/syllables before the last word part. An example of this would be, "adventure"-- students spelled the word as aventure or adenture instead. We will be practicing breaking apart words by syllables to help sound out and chunk-spell words correctly. I will be sending the graded tests from last week home tomorrow so that you know what to study for and students will be retested this Friday. I will be inputting the grades into ASPEN and then updating with the new test scores from this week. The higher grade will be taken into account and the lower will be dropped. As a reminder, the words are capture, adventure, mixture, nature, picture, addition, vacation, definition, information, and caption. NWEA testing First grade will be NWEA testing on June 11th (reading) and June 12th (math). You may have noticed in the schedule, that first grade is the last group to test in the school. Lenart students transition to a different test in 2nd grade. In kindergarten, students take the NWEA K-2 grades test. Most of the students stayed on this version of the test, while some students transitioned to the next test (NWEA 2-5 grades) if they tested out with a 190 score and above. In the last testing session of 1st grade, administration has decided to push all students in 1st grade-- regardless of if they are at 190 or below-- to the harder version of the NWEA 2-5 test in preparation for next year. In order to "push up" students to the next test, we need to wait until the testing window is open which begins the week of June 11th. This is a more difficult test with harder questions-- but is done to prepare the students for 2nd grade and above. Aspen Thank you for your patience as we all transition to the new grade book system. ASPEN is aware of issues as we have switched over. If you are unable to access Aspen to view grades, please contact Mr. Lin for help. You can call the office at 773-535-0040 or email him at [email protected]. Hi families,
Here are your updates for the week: Important Dates May 27th - No School - Memorial Day June 6th - Field Trip to Lincoln Park Zoo June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 11th - NWEA Reading Test June 12th - NWEA Math Test June 14th - Award Ceremony June 20th - Last Day of School/Field Day Field Trip Thank you the 11 families that have turned in their field trip form and money. Peak into this Week In reading, we are continue to be reflective upon what makes a great reader-- not just reading the words, but thinking about the words and how it makes us feel, react, how it may change the story we are reading. We are becoming more cognizant readers. We are also working on determining the cause and effects to the texts that we read and are noticing that an event may have multiple causes that lead to an effect or multiple effects that led from one cause. In writing, we have begun writing the evidence/reasonings to our opinion and are working on writing an introduction and conclusion to our writing piece. In social studies, we are learning about the natural resources that the Earth provides us. In math, we will be having a math test on Wednesday. Students will be tested on solving multiplication and division problems using the strategies that were taught in class. For multiplication, the strategies that we've learned are arrays, equal groups, repeated addition, and number line. In division, the strategies we've learned about are equal groups and repeated subtraction. In spelling, we are working on -ture and -tion words. The words are

Aspen As we transitioned over to a new grade book system (Aspen) after Spring, there has been a huge learning curve and many technical difficulties on my end. I have started to slowly input grades in Aspen. You will be seeing a lot more in the upcoming week as I am inputting older assignments from the beginning of quarter 4. I am still trying to figure out how Aspen works, so please let me know if you don't see anything pop up. Thank you for your patience as we all transition to the new grade book system. If you don't know how to access Aspen to view grades, please contact Mr. Lin for help. You can call the office at 773-535-0040 or email him at [email protected] Planets Video
As we finished up our planets informational books, Ms. Villwock recorded the students on a green screen and students said 2 of their favorite facts about their planet. We were hoping that the video would be done in time for the writing museum, but it unfortunately didn't get finished. Ms. Villwock has just shared the finished product and can be viewed here. (If you notice that your child is not in the video, it was because they were either absent the day of recording or because they did not finish their informational book in time.) You can find the Google Form here. Math Earlier in the week, I sent out two photos in assisting students in answering multiplication and division word problems. In class we have learned various strategies and the pictures go over the strategies taught. My apologies that pictures were sent as a file that could not be viewed by certain people. I have corrected the files and can be viewed here and here. Array City Here is an updated picture of the class' Array City!! Come up to the 2nd floor to check it out in person if you can! :) Upcoming Important Dates May 15th - Family Fitness Night (5:30p-7:00p) May 17th - Progress Reports May 27th - No School - Memorial Day June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 14th - Award Ceremony June 20th - Last Day of School/Field Day Hi families-
I hope that you had a wonderful Spring Break. From the class sharing, it sounds like many of you had a very busy break!! We are counting down to the last two months of the school year. Upcoming Important Dates April 30th - Music Field Trip to Kenwood School (information to come) May 15th - Family Fitness Night (5:30p-7:00p) May 17th - Progress Reports May 27th - No School - Memorial Day June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 14th - Award Ceremony June 20th - Last Day of School! **Field Day TBA Writing Museum You are invited to come see our writing museum this week. Our writing museum will be on Thursday, April 25th from 10:15-11:15 in the morning and 1:30-2:30 in the afternoon. We will be featuring the students' hard work on their planets informational books. No worries if you're not able to make it, the students will be sent home with their finished products :). Peek into our Classroom As we enter in the beginning of the last quarter, we will be learning the last few 2nd grade things and starting on some 3rd grade curriculum. You may have noticed in the week before Spring break, students were learning the beginnings of multiplication. We will be continuing that with the foundations of multiplication and learning the different strategies of solving multiplication problems. The five strategies that we've covered and will be continuing to use are skip counting (click here for the math chants that we practice), arrays, repeated addition, number line, and equal groups. This week we will be covering the commutative property of multiplication, division as sharing, and division as repeated subtraction. In writing we have begun our opinion writing unit. Today we learned how to brainstorm our ideas/reasons to make a strong opinion using a graphic organizer as a tool. We will continue to build these out on how to make our brainstorm ideas into an opinion writing piece. In reading, we are learning about author's purpose (to persuade, inform, or entertain) and have been looking at different examples of texts to identify what is the author's purpose and how we know. We will then take this and look into the author's craft of the text's structure to solidify our answer of what the purpose is. We have completed our science unit last quarter and are switching back over to social studies where we will be looking at how our Earth provides resources for us now and in history. We will also be looking at how we work together as people to serve in our communities and the roles we all play. Array City In the week before Spring Break, we started a math project called "Array City" in class. Students were able to make different buildings with the windows as arrays. They then took each building and wrote the multiplication and addition equations that coincided with the array. Here is a couple of pictures of their amazing projects (picture one, picture two)If you're ever in the 2nd floor of Lenart, you'll see their awesome array cities hung up. Music Field Trip Students were sent home with a music field trip form for April 30th yesterday. The field trip is to Kenwood Academy and is $7 for the bus. If you have any questions about the field trip, please contact Mr. Coulter at [email protected]. Please have your child turn in the permission slip and money by Friday, April 26th. Chaperones will be notified if they have been selected by Friday via email. Have a wonderful week! :) I don't know about you, but this warm weather really reminds me of how close Spring Break is-- or perhaps it's just how restless the kiddos have been.
This week will be a rather easy-going week. We are putting our final touches on our informational books (still), but we also have a little surprise that we are putting together for our writing museum. I had previously anticipated that our writing museum would be this Thursday and Friday-- however many of our students are still finishing their final drafts so we'll have to postpone it. I'm looking at the Thursday and Friday when we return after break. There will be no reading log for this week. Spelling words for this week were given last week. Students will be tested this Friday, April 12th. The spelling focus are words that end with "y" and how to correctly make it plural/add s at the end. The rule is that if a vowel comes before the y, then just add s. If a consonant comes before the y, then change the y to an i and add es. In math we are starting in our 3rd grade math book-- starting with the basics of multiplication. We are beginning with multiplication as repeated addition, and moving forward with multiplication as arrays (rows and columns), patterns within multiplication, and the commutative property of multiplication. Book fair started today for students. All the students were able to make a visit to the book fair today, whether they brought money or not. For the rest of the week, only students who bring money will be able to make a visit to the book fair. Most of the students in our class were able to make a "wish list" of books and you will be receiving that list of items during report card pick up on Wednesday. As a reminder, this Wednesday, April 10th is a non-attendance day of school for Students. Parent-Teacher conferences/Report Card pick up is scheduled on this date from 11:00a-6:00p. Thank you to all those who used the following link to sign up online (HERE). If you still haven't signed up and none of the remaining times work for you, please let me know and we can set up an alternative time and day. Upcoming Important DatesApril 8th - Book fair begins April 10th – Parent-Teacher Conferences (Report Card Pick up) April 12th - Book fair ends April 15th – Start of Spring Break April 22nd – Students Return from Spring Break April 30th - Music Field Trip to Kenwood School (information to come) May 15th - Family Fitness Night (5:30p-7:00p) May 17th - Progress Reports May 27th - No School - Memorial Day June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 14th - Award Ceremony June 20th - Last Day of School! Hi families-
Here are your updates for the week Report Card Conferences Report Card Conferences are scheduled for April 10th from 11:00a-6:00p (with 3:00-4:00 closed for teacher lunch). You should have received an email notification to sign up; however if you did not, you can sign up using this link. If none of these times on this date works for you, please let me know and we can set up an alternative meeting time. Peak into This Week In reading, we are looking into comparing and contrasting the different characters and stories (RL.2.9). In math we are working on dividing a rectangle into equal squares; and dividing circles and rectangle into halves, thirds, and fourths (2.GA.3). In spelling we are working on words that end with "y" and how to correctly make it plural/add s at the end. The rule is that if a vowel comes before the y, then just add s. If a consonant comes before the y, then change the y to an i and add es. The test to our spelling words will be on April 12th due to the upcoming no attendance days for students. Words are boys, days, plays, annoys, enjoys, armies, pennies, copies, berries, ladies. Writing Museum We are just about done with our informational books on planets. We are finishing our final drafts this week. Our writing museum will be scheduled for April 11th and 12th-- more details to come regarding time soon. Important Dates 4th – End of Quarter 3 5th – No School 8th - Book fair begins 10th – Parent-Teacher Conferences (Report Card Pick up) 12th - Book fair ends 15th – Start of Spring Break 22nd – Students Return from Spring Break Good afternoon families,
We're in another crazy week of 1st grade. Yesterday's field trip was so much fun! Students really enjoyed exploring and learning more about the solar system through the short film and different exhibits. As the weather is getting nicer, please note that students will be spending recess outdoors unless there is precipitation. Please make sure that your child is dressed to be outside. Sight words Students were sent home with a bright pink sheet of their pre-test for the remaining 2 lists. Students either had a white sheet attached that said that they have received a 20/20 on both lists and will have no more sight words to complete or they had a white sheet where they will be tested again on March 27th. Please note if your child is done with their sight words or are going to be tested on list 19 and/or list 20. Peak into our Classroom This week we are cranking it into high gear for our informational writing. We are done with our research portion. We have taken all of our facts that we've found and categorized them into different topics/main ideas. We are now taking each set of main ideas and the supporting details into our first drafts of our informational writing. In reading (RI.2.6, RI.2.8) we will be reading nonfictional books and identifying the main purpose of the text-- determining the details that support that claim in the informational text (example: the purpose of the reading is for readers to understand that snakes are not actually a scary animal-- but rather very cool in its ways to protect itself-- by the way/how the author writes presents the facts). In math we will be looking to at more line plots, picture graphs, and bar graphs where we will answer general questions about them, but also draw conclusions about the information presented. Students will be tested on this skill on Friday, March 22nd. Study guides will be given tomorrow to help study. Spelling words are all compound words. Our words this week are: strawberry, birthday, airplane, underwater, waterfall, flashlight, backpack, rainbow, ladybug, classroom. Important Dates March 21st - Family Literacy Night (5:30p-7:00p) March 22nd - Spring Picture day April 4th - Quarter 3 Ends April 5th - No school for students April 8th - Spring Scholastic Book Fair Begins April 12th - Spring Scholastic Book Fair Ends April 15th - Spring Break Begins April 19th - Spring Break Ends |
