I hope you all are well on this very chilly Monday. Here are your updates for the week! Latest NWEA scores Please be on the lookout for an email from me regarding your child's latest NWEA scores. In the email you will find your child's latest scores as well as their latest student profile with all of the skills that they are ready to develop/learn. I will try to have everyone's sent out by the end of this week. I thank you in advance for your patience as it is a 1,000+ page document that I need to separate by each child and save again as a new document for each student. Peak into a Classroom For the last couple of weeks we have been working on measurement/length and deciding in word problems/situations when it is appropriate to add and/or subtract lengths. (2.MD.B.5 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem; 2.MD.B.6 Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2, ..., and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram.) Students will have a test on this math skill on Wednesday. Students were sent home today with a practice test/study guide of what their test will have. This practice test/study guide is extremely similar to the one that will be given to the students. The difference between this practice test and the one that the students will take on Wednesday are changes in names and numbers. The format and types of questions are exactly the same. Students who do well on this study guide will do similarly on the test on Wednesday. Students will have today and tomorrow to complete that study guide/practice test and it does not need to be turned in. As always, you can find supporting videos and problems using your student's log in on PearsonRealize. Moving forward after Wednesday, we will be working on Topic 14 in our math books. In Topic 14, we will be looking at graphs and data (2.MD.D.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems1using information presented in a bar graph.). In phonics, we are continuing in inflective endings moving from 1 syllable CVC verbs with -ed to adding -ing at the end of 1 syllable CVC verbs. The phonics rules that were introduced last week of -ed verbs are the same as when those 1 syllable CVC verbs have -ing at the end. Our spelling words this week are skipping, grinning, dripping, tugging, knotting, finding, reaching, starting, marching, resting We have been working in reading, writing, and science in isolation in these last few weeks and now we are going to bring all of our skills that we've been working on together. Students will be researching using internet resources, books, magazines, videos on their assigned planets. They will determine the main idea topic through questions that they generate and information that they read from their research and determine the details that support their main idea (RI.2.1, RI.2.2). They will then organize the pieces of information that they find into a book (W.2.2, W.2.7). That means that our writing museum will be coming within the next couple of weeks! Woohoo! Look out for your invitation with details :). Sight Words There were no sight words this week. I am a little behind in assessing students for list 17 and 18 because I lost my middle school helpers on Friday-- however Ms. Daniels was able to assist and tested most students on these last two lists. We have two more lists to go in first grade. I will be having Ms. Daniels assess the students on the remaining 2 lists to see if they can just skip the regular sight words schedule or if they'll need to stay on track. You will be notified if the students pass the two remaining lists and will not need to take it with the rest of the class. Field Trip All field trip money and forms for our trip to the Adler Planetarium on 3/18 will be due THIS Friday, March 8th. The trip is a total of $14 and all students and chaperones will need to bring a bagged lunch. Chaperones will be notified on this day via email. Please note that if you volunteered to chaperone, you must be a level 1 volunteer through CPS. To start your application process, click here.
