Hi families,
Here are your updates for the week: Important Dates May 27th - No School - Memorial Day June 6th - Field Trip to Lincoln Park Zoo June 7th - School Picnic (9:00a-2:00p) June 11th - NWEA Reading Test June 12th - NWEA Math Test June 14th - Award Ceremony June 20th - Last Day of School/Field Day Field Trip Thank you the 11 families that have turned in their field trip form and money. Please remember that forms and $7 for the bus is due next week Friday! We will be going with Kindergarten and 2nd grade. The field trip will be on Thursday, June 6th. Please let me know if you would like to chaperone-- you must have gone through the CPS volunteer application and be a level 1 or 2 (Level 1 preferred). The trip will be free for chaperones, however students will need to pay $7 for the bus. We will be eating lunch at the zoo so please prepare a home lunch (I recommend packing it in a bag in that can be disposed or easily held on it -- example a drawstring bag-- for convenience). Peak into this Week In reading, we are continue to be reflective upon what makes a great reader-- not just reading the words, but thinking about the words and how it makes us feel, react, how it may change the story we are reading. We are becoming more cognizant readers. We are also working on determining the cause and effects to the texts that we read and are noticing that an event may have multiple causes that lead to an effect or multiple effects that led from one cause. In writing, we have begun writing the evidence/reasonings to our opinion and are working on writing an introduction and conclusion to our writing piece. In social studies, we are learning about the natural resources that the Earth provides us. In math, we will be having a math test on Wednesday. Students will be tested on solving multiplication and division problems using the strategies that were taught in class. For multiplication, the strategies that we've learned are arrays, equal groups, repeated addition, and number line. In division, the strategies we've learned about are equal groups and repeated subtraction. In spelling, we are working on -ture and -tion words. The words are
Picnic The school picnic is coming up on June 7th! The LPCG will be organizing this school event. It is an all-day event from 9:00-2:00 and families are welcome to join us. Lunch will be provided for students. In previous years, parents bring snacks, drinks, games, foldable tables, foldable chairs, sunscreen, etc. for our class throughout the day. You can sign up for what you would like to bring for the day-- this is optional but really helps in making the day enjoyable and a success for our kiddos. You can sign up here. Another thing I will be requesting is for a family or two to bring a large tent. Our class will be given a designated area on the field as "home base". The large tent will provide cover for the day. More info to come as the date approaches. NWEA testing First grade will be NWEA testing on June 11th (reading) and June 12th (math). You may have noticed in the schedule, that first grade is the last group to test in the school. Lenart students transition to a different test in 2nd grade. In kindergarten, students take the NWEA K-2 grades test. Most of the students stayed on this version of the test, while some students transitioned to the next test (NWEA 2-5 grades) if they tested out with a 190 score and above. In the last testing session of 1st grade, administration has decided to push all students in 1st grade-- regardless of if they are at 190 or below-- to the harder version of the NWEA 2-5 test in preparation for next year. In order to "push up" students to the next test, we need to wait until the testing window is open which begins the week of June 11th. This is a more difficult test with harder questions-- but is done to prepare the students for 2nd grade and above. Aspen Thank you for your patience as we all transition to the new grade book system. ASPEN is aware of issues as we have switched over. If you are unable to access Aspen to view grades, please contact Mr. Lin for help. You can call the office at 773-535-0040 or email him at [email protected].
