Hi parents,
I hope you all are well on this very chilly Monday. Here are your updates for the week! Latest NWEA scores Please be on the lookout for an email from me regarding your child's latest NWEA scores. In the email you will find your child's latest scores as well as their latest student profile with all of the skills that they are ready to develop/learn. I will try to have everyone's sent out by the end of this week. I thank you in advance for your patience as it is a 1,000+ page document that I need to separate by each child and save again as a new document for each student. Peak into a Classroom For the last couple of weeks we have been working on measurement/length and deciding in word problems/situations when it is appropriate to add and/or subtract lengths. (2.MD.B.5 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers) and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem; 2.MD.B.6 Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2, ..., and represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram.) Students will have a test on this math skill on Wednesday. Students were sent home today with a practice test/study guide of what their test will have. This practice test/study guide is extremely similar to the one that will be given to the students. The difference between this practice test and the one that the students will take on Wednesday are changes in names and numbers. The format and types of questions are exactly the same. Students who do well on this study guide will do similarly on the test on Wednesday. Students will have today and tomorrow to complete that study guide/practice test and it does not need to be turned in. As always, you can find supporting videos and problems using your student's log in on PearsonRealize. Moving forward after Wednesday, we will be working on Topic 14 in our math books. In Topic 14, we will be looking at graphs and data (2.MD.D.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems1using information presented in a bar graph.). In phonics, we are continuing in inflective endings moving from 1 syllable CVC verbs with -ed to adding -ing at the end of 1 syllable CVC verbs. The phonics rules that were introduced last week of -ed verbs are the same as when those 1 syllable CVC verbs have -ing at the end. Our spelling words this week are skipping, grinning, dripping, tugging, knotting, finding, reaching, starting, marching, resting We have been working in reading, writing, and science in isolation in these last few weeks and now we are going to bring all of our skills that we've been working on together. Students will be researching using internet resources, books, magazines, videos on their assigned planets. They will determine the main idea topic through questions that they generate and information that they read from their research and determine the details that support their main idea (RI.2.1, RI.2.2). They will then organize the pieces of information that they find into a book (W.2.2, W.2.7). That means that our writing museum will be coming within the next couple of weeks! Woohoo! Look out for your invitation with details :). Sight Words There were no sight words this week. I am a little behind in assessing students for list 17 and 18 because I lost my middle school helpers on Friday-- however Ms. Daniels was able to assist and tested most students on these last two lists. We have two more lists to go in first grade. I will be having Ms. Daniels assess the students on the remaining 2 lists to see if they can just skip the regular sight words schedule or if they'll need to stay on track. You will be notified if the students pass the two remaining lists and will not need to take it with the rest of the class. Field Trip All field trip money and forms for our trip to the Adler Planetarium on 3/18 will be due THIS Friday, March 8th. The trip is a total of $14 and all students and chaperones will need to bring a bagged lunch. Chaperones will be notified on this day via email. Please note that if you volunteered to chaperone, you must be a level 1 volunteer through CPS. To start your application process, click here. Upcoming Important Dates March 18th - Field Trip March 21st - Family Literacy Night (5:30-7:00pm) March 22nd - Spring Picture Day

Hi families-
I hope you all had a wonderful extended weekend. Here are your updates for the week: A peek into the classroom Our spelling words this week will follow the pattern of hard and soft g. Words with soft g makes the /j/ sound (like giraffe). Words with the hard g makes the /g/ sound (like goat). When deciding whether or not to read a word as a hard or soft g, we look at the following rules: if the vowels e, i, or y come after the letter g, then it is read as /j/ (soft g). If the letter a, o, u, or any other consonant come after the letter g, then the word is read as hard g. This week's spelling words are: age, angel, germ, gym, huge, goat, gas, dragon, good, glue. Our sight words for this week are France, column, church, oxygen, various, opposite, chart, pretty, fresh, suffix, repeated, western, sister, plural, agreed, wrong, prepared, solution, shop, especially. List 17 powerpoint can be found here. In reading, we are working on reading nonfiction texts and pulling out the main idea and supporting details. This will come into play for our writing unit in informational. Students will be assigned a planet and they will research and write an informational book about that planet. In math, we finished practicing how to measure with various measuring tools. This week we will be looking at different measurements and solving problems with them with addition and subtraction (i.e. finding the perimeter of a door with given height and length and/or finding how much longer one scarf is than another given both of their lengths in centimeters). 100th Day of School The 100th day of school is this week! It will be on Thursday, February 21st. We will be doing different literacy and math activities that are related to the day. Students are welcomed to dress up in two ways: 1) Dressing up as if they are 100 years old - wigs, gray hair spray, eye glasses, etc. 2) Wearing a shirt/pants/hat that represents 100 things on it (i.e., 100 cotton balls glued on to a tshirt, 100 stickers or buttons stuck on a hat) Here is a link for inspiration: HERE Health Completed Mr. McCracken has shared with me that 1st grade health is now completed and classes will resume as both days Tuesdays and Fridays with gym. IN NEED OF SUPPLIES! It's that time of year again where we are low on supplies! We are particularly low on wet wipes (for surfaces), paper towels, and kleenex. The class would greatly appreciate it if those particular items were replenished :). Important Dates February 21st - 100th Day of School! March 21st - Literacy Night 5:30-7:00 March 22nd - Spring Pictures (more info to come) Ms. Chin Welcome to the 3rd quarter! Can you believe we're halfway through with 1st grade?!
100th Day of School The 100th day of school is soon approaching! It will be on Thursday, February 21st. We will be doing all sorts of literacy and math activities that are related to the day. Students are welcomed to dress up in two ways: 1) Dressing up as if they are 100 years old - wigs, gray hair spray, eye glasses, etc. 2) Wearing a shirt/pants/hat that represents 100 things on it (i.e., 100 cotton balls glued on to a tshirt, 100 stickers or buttons stuck on a hat) Sight words We're currently on List 16- only 4 more to go! Students will be tested on Friday, February 8th. Spelling words Our spelling pattern this week will be: hard and soft c. "Hard c" words make the /k/ sound while "soft c" words make the /s/ sound. When deciding whether or not to read a word has a hard or soft c, we look at the following rules. If the vowels a, o, or u come after the letter c or any consonants-- then it is read as /k/. If the letter e, i, or y come after the letter c, then the word is read as the /s/ sound. This week's spelling words are: circle, city, space, lettuce, ice, corn, cold, cable, cake, current. Valentine's Day As Valentine's Day is approaching next week Thursday, if students would like to bring little cards and/or trinkets such as pencils, erasers, stickers, for the class, they may. If you have any questions, please let me know. Changes to School Year Schedule Due to CPS being closed last Wednesday and Thursday for the weather, student instructional days will be added to the CPS calendar for Wednesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 20, pending approval from the Chicago Board of Education. Admission is $5 per person; children under 3 are free; families of 4 or more can pay a family fee of $20. Participants have free admission. The Parent Child Dance has been rescheduled from February 8 to February 15 5:30-7:30 p.m Have a great rest of your week :). Ms. Chin Hi families-
CPS has just announced that in addition to schools being closed tomorrow, January 30th, there will also be no school on Thursday, January 31st. Please also note that there will be no classes for students on Friday, February 1st due to Teacher Professional Development. Have a warm and safe 5-day weekend, Ms. Chi Happy 83rd day of school (I think that's the day...). I hope you all had a great extended weekend. We just started NWEA testing today. We will be continuing our test tomorrow with math. The students overall did really great did in reading and showed tremendous growth. I really tried to emphasize for the students to take breaks and pace themselves. You will receive detailed information about your child's individual scores by the end of this week or next.
Sight words We are on list 15. You can find the powerpoint to them here. Students will receive a new sight words handout tomorrow on a yellow sheet of paper. The sight word hand out that was given out today had a typo in it. A word was listed as "amy" when it should be listed as "army." The new yellow sheet will have the corrected words. Students will be tested on Friday, January 25th. Talent Show Today was the talent show auditions. The actual talent show will be on Thursday, January 31st at 6:00pm. Spelling Words This week's spelling words will be a continuation of last week's sight words. The results of this past week's spelling test on contractions showed that the students as a whole do not have a firm understanding contractions (where exactly an apostrophe goes and what it does). We looked into contractions and apostrophe's deeper in a lesson today and will be practicing throughout the week. I am going to put in last week's spelling test scores and take this week's as a "retake." The higher score will be taken into your child's writing grade. Important Upcoming Dates January 31st – Quarter 2 Ends/Talent Show 6pm February 1st – No School (Teacher Institute Day) February 8th – Report Card Distribution Day/LPCG Parent Child Dance (5:30p-7:30p) February 18th – No School (President’s Day) Have a great rest of your week, Ms. Chin Thank you all for your kind words and well wishes. After an extra day of rest, I am feeling much better. Here are your updates for the week:

Reading log As a school, we participate in the Six Flags Read to Succeed. Students are required to log in a minimum of 360 minutes and they will receive a free admission ticket to Six Flags at the end of the year. In lieu of our weekly reading logs, students received an empty reading log from 6 flags. We will be working on some super secret projects in 1st grade for the next couple of days. These projects may get a little messy so I request that students bring a change of clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Especially with the next 2 days of dressing up for the Winter Performance-- we don't want to mess up their clothing. Students have written in their agenda "super secret project t-shirt." A big tshirt, apron, or smock will do just fine. Hopefully you'll see the outcome of our super secret project over winter break ;). Spelling & Sight Words There will be no spelling words for this week. I did assign sight words though and the list has been placed in your child's red folder. Students will be assessed on Friday, December 21st. Winter Music Performance The first grade will be performing on the 18th and the 19th. There will be two performances on Tuesday, December 18th. There will be a morning show during school hours at 8:30am that families are invited to come to. There will also be an evening show on the 18th at 6:00pm that is open to Lenart families as well. Attendance for the evening show is not mandatory. On Wednesday the 19th, the first grade students will be performing for the rest of the school in the morning. All students must wear a white dress shirt, black bottoms, and black shoes. If you have any questions about the performances or dress requirements, please reach out to Mr. Coulter by calling the school at 773-535-0040 or email him at [email protected] Classroom Germs Unfortunately our class has been hit by the sick-bug again and several students have been absent and/or complaining of feeling ill. I ask that we all be proactive in dressing the kiddos appropriately for school. Unless weather does not permit, students will be going outside for recess so please make sure they are dressed warmly! Winter Break The last day of school before winter break is Friday, December 21st. Winter Break will be from December 24th to January 4th. Students will return back in the new year on January 7th. I would like to get a headcount for some fun winter activities for us to do leading up to winter break and need to buy the appropriate amount of materials. Other updates Students in the classroom have been very "touchy" in class and sometimes in not so appropriate ways. Several students want to hug everyone and it has sometimes moved to kissing each other. In class we have been discussing how not everyone wants to be hugged/touched and you must ask for permission to hug someone and how if no one is able to touch you without your consent. I welcome you to have these same conversations at home with the students. Hi families!
